The curfew

The doors were closed shut as the agents of the Magistrate floated through the streets. According to the curfew, Durann had withdrawn himself into his house along with his wife and two boys. The curfew applied to the entire Middle Ring of Highhold. Durann excelled in the art of dictography: the study of writing, calculating and finance. In doing so he worked his way up the ranks of order and hierarchy. The powerful institutions of the governing Magistrate had plenty of uses for his unique skillset.

He lived a careful and obedient life: a teaching he bestowed upon his overly curious sons. Listen to your superiors and don’t try to find trouble, so trouble won’t try to find you.

His wife burst into his study.

“Durann! It’s the boys. They’re not in their room and their window is opened!”
